Child Support

Child Support

Parents who have physical custody of the child(ren) typically have a greater need for child support payments. California has a standard calculator that reviews three primary factors including disposable income, the number of children for whom support is being paid, and the amount of time each parent spends with the child. This information is used to establish base child support payments.

There are circumstances, such as parents’ work status, health issues, travel costs, and other factors that may increase or decrease the amount of support the custodial parent is awarded. If the parents can agree on a specific amount of child support, provided it is reasonable, the court may also accept their agreement.

The financial support of a child is the legal and ethical responsibility of both parents until the child reaches the age of 18.
